Web Domains and Information Literacy
Objective: SWBAT create a wiki entry (that could be saved as a poster) for
the school that outlines what each letter stands for in the process of evaluating
a website: AAOCU---based on the website studied below (in blue).
1. Day 1-2: Study the website in blue below and take brief Cornell Notes---posting to your wiki space---also noting which website you
evaluated (and the results). Class discussion and assignment of wiki logins.
Use our BCPS/MSDE fee-based databases to find an inappropriate or appropriate website:
http://www.bcps.org/offices/lis/feebased/index.html
2. Day 3: Create a brief, but comprensive (complete) WIKI entry that covers the points in #1 above. Create your entry in WORD
first, then copy and paste to the WIKI site IOT save time (and not have to steal the wiki lock). Use your handwritten notes to assist
you.
3. Day 4: Review our wiki entries, and we'll laminate those docs that can be placed around the school.
Library Media---BCPS/MSDE-Objectives----SWBAT:
5.1 Recognize the impact of technology on information storage and retrieval in order to utilize and manage the increasing number of electronic resources proficiently.
5.2 Manipulate info using electronic resources in order to efficiently retrieve, organize, and produce info.
What will students learn? The anatomy of a web address. Why is it important? The Internet is a tremendous source of information, but to use it efficiently, you but have some basic knowledge.
How will students demonstrate learning? What will students do to apply learning? Evaluate web sites.
MINDJOG/ Hook / Motivation/ Personal Connection:
What do the parts of the URL “www.bcps.org” indicate?
Break down the URL: www = world wide web -- bcps =Baltimore County Public Schools
org = organization
What does URL mean? (universal resource locator) What might you have expected to see after bcps instead of org? (edu for education)
INFORMATION APPLICATION / NEW LEARNING (activity/procedure)
What are domains? (Domain name) strings of letters used to name organizations, computers and addresses on the Internet (Example: "Domain names are organized hierarchically with the more generic parts to the right.")
List some URL endings; ask students what they stand for. Four common domains are:
.edu (education),
.gov (government agency),
.net (network related), .com (commercial),
.org (nonprofit and research organizations).
Outside the US, domains indicate country: ca (Canada), uk (United Kingdom), au (Australia), jp (Japan), fr (France), etc. Neither of these lists is exhaustive.
Why do we care about the components of a URL?
Is all information on the web accurate? How can you tell?
Show the students the Web Evaluation process at: http://www.bcps.org/offices/lis/models/tips/eval.html
Have students do a sample search on a simple topic you choose. (an invention, technology career, communications topic.)
SWBAT create a WORD DOCUMENT showing what each letter stands for in the process of evaluating a website: AAOCU.
REFLECTION & ASSESSMENT
Reflection: Students should share some of the findings posted at their wiki.
Assessment: Have the students review their peer evaluations/findings at the wiki and write a final note at their own wiki posting.

The criteria’s are authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency, usability.
• Authority-indicates whether or not an individual, an organization, or agency is recognized as an expert in a field and if that body is knowledgeable, qualified, and reliable.
• Accuracy-how correct, how reliable the information is contained on the web site.

When I am on the internet I can remember that it can be very useful for researching certain topics. it can be almost useless for other topics. To research a topic thoroughly, use a variety of sources, both internet and non-internet.

Al-Shalchi, Hadeel. "In a TV Comedy, Egyptian Women Gain a Voice on Marriage." Washington Post. 17 Oct 2010: A6. SIRS Renaissance. Web. 02 Feb 2011.
Accuracy: this website is not reliable because it is TV and sometimes what you hear on TV can’t be true and if you want to look up Egypt then this article is not the right article to pick
Authority: it is an authority because it is a website which is like a commercial
Objectivity: it does not have objectivity because it says “in a TV comedy, Egyptian women gain a voice on marriage” and objectivity means how factual it is
Currency: this is current because it was made a couple of months ago, and it is still new
Usability: this website can be useful because it allows you easy access to it give you all the information that you need about the article or the thing that you might have looked up
Trash or Treasure: this is trash because it is about something in TV and if you want to look up Egypt then you should not pick this article because if you want to know information about Egypt then TV is not the right choice because it might not be true.
I would not recommend this article for my peers based on the paragraph info above.
